Using NotebookLM to make an AI podcast about product management

Inspired by Simon Willison's blog about making podcasts from his own blog posts, I thought I'd point Google's new NotebookLM tool at my Public Sector Product Manager's Cookbook and the results were pretty incredible.

I used the tool on its default setting, leaving it to do its thing after pointing it at the URL of the cookbook. It only took three or four minutes to generate this seriously impressive 15 minute podcast chat between two affable American AI podcast personalities.

Podcasts and the future of AI parasocial relationships

I once saw podcasts described as 'friendship simulators'. You spend hours of your life listening to and being invested in what your favourite podcast hosts have to say about a topic you're really interested in, so it's inevitable you'll develop some kind of relationship with them (and typically, a unreciprocated parasocial one at that). What does a realistic sounding podcast-based friendship simulator mean for the future of our already complex relationships with our mass media performers? Well strap in Dorothy because we're about to find out!

What is this useful for?

This could be a novel and engaging way of learning new things or digesting lots of complex text but I think I'm too concerned about the much too effective masking of hallucinations and omissions to use it for anything really important. So for me it's utility is going to be limited to infotainment, and I feel like there are already enough good 'real' options for that without having to put in the effort to direct my own bespoke version of Stuff You Should Know.

From a business perspective though, if I was running a company like Gimlet Media that made branded podcasts for other companies, I would be more than a little bit worried right now.
